There is an utter and brutal rawness in these images, Toby’s unapologetic shoot from the hip style and use of strong black points and shadow makes for stark contrasting images, sometimes not pleasing on the eye but nevertheless puts you right there - you can hear the noise, feel the heat through the visual.
Dirty, raw and not easy to capture, right place, right time, and as he puts it, ‘just luck‘ - do not underestimate the underlying talent pushing the button on the camera.
An almost combat photojournalistic style where you don’t have time to think is the overriding sense these images give. Shoot first. If you don't, the moment, the light, the sense of place, pace, all gone. No set up, no studio lighting, no make-up, no filters.
Deliberately un-edited, lens scratch marks and all, light noise, camera smears, Toby captures life in a way that could be mistaken for stills from dystopian films, flash backs from camcorder b-movies or long lost forgotten polaroids.
Make no mistake. this is real life and its as real as it gets.
