My Ethos | Design Philosophy | Toby Tinsley, Dorset
Talent is a given, you either have it or you don’t. Being taught by better people than you will hone your skills and nurture your abilities. By studying and learning you will understand and master the technical tools required to bring your ideas to life. By working alongside people who are more skilful than you will push your ambition. But no one can teach you to become a designer. This is something only you can teach yourself.
And it takes a lifetime to master.
Toby Tinsley is an award-winning graphic and illustrative designer. Having worked and lived in four continents, he specialises in print, interactive, audio visual, branding and place making, and has over 30 years’ experience working on over 450 projects in the global public domain. At the time of publication, this website showcases three decades of work across fifteen visual communication disciplines
The Toby Process
Built different
Building brands from nothing, rebuilding brands that lost their way, and sharpening brands that didn’t know what they stood for.
The depth of experience isn’t decorative. It means a brief will be read quickly, you’ll be asked the right questions - without the months of discovery theatre that agencies build into their timeliness and fees. Toby’s work is seen all over the world, consistently and seamlessly blending into the lives of millions.
Its not extraordinary. Its far from ordinary.

Deliberate disruption

Working differently by design. Toby takes the brief. Toby does the work. Simple. No account handlers, no hand-offs, no layers between your problem and Toby solving it. Scaling up or focusing in depending on what the project needs - either solo or bringing in the right combination of his strategic and creative freelancers, and nothing else. It’s a faster, better value and more effective way to work.
‘From Parietal to Stæfræw, Visual Communication through Components and Radicals' by Toby Tinsley
Synopsis from Letters. The Only Audio-Visual Language. Letters.
Combine a few of them in the right order and you create words. Multiple words create sentences, sentences to paragraphs, paragraphs to books. All knowledge, information and imagination recorded by the simple, humble letter. But the word“letter” is just a name we have put to a shape. This shape, made from components and radicals, also comes with a nominated sound, which we have also given it.
The fact is, we are not actually reading letters and words and sentences at all. We are looking at a series of shapes, which, when combined in such a way, allow us to put pictures and images in our minds. So these shapes could be defined as pictures when they are joined together to create what we call words. The word is effectively a collection of shapes that create one picture. By this definition, this thesis explores the theory that we actually visually communicate entirely pictographically. Even by the time you finish reading this small synopsis, your brain has processed over 1600 shapes, creating approx 240 pictures, which you fully understand the meaning of without actually ‘reading’ anything at all. After all, reading is just another name we have given to the process of looking at simple yet highly evolved logographs.
Every letter is a piece of art in its own right; words are the paintings, sentences become the narrative, and books are our galleries so we can fill our imagination, fuel our knowledge and record our histories.
The simple, humble letter. The third form of all human communication. Our alphabet paints pictures without a brush or camera. Letters have form, beauty and most importantly, meaning. Denoted by visual and audio recognition.
Every letter is a form of Art.
